Pre-Production Completed

By completing all our research and planning (posted below), ATLAS media productions will be able to shoot the two minute short after our Half Term week holiday when the school will be re-open. We will post shoot by shoot; the problems experienced, how good the shoot went and any changes to the previous ideas. After completing the film, we will move onto editing all of the footage and inclusion of any sound and music, still images or special effects thus ending up with our film film.

Possible Shooting Problems

During the filming of Catechize Acadamy our 2 minute short film, we have eliminated several problems.
Costume Changes;
During our film, we have no scheduled costume changes as we are setting the film to be on the same school day.
Travelling between Locations
Our filming location has been decided to be filmed within school, so travelling between locations will all within walking distance.
Producing same shot/angle
We are planning to film in order of location, to ensure that we are using the same shooting angle if a duplicated shot is required.
Weather Conditions
We are filming all scene's inside the school, so even though the weather may change this may just be a way of showing time past.
Changes of Natural Light
If there is a drop in natural light, we may possibly use production artificial lighting to address the drop in light. If there is a increase in natural light, then filming may have to be halted and timing schedule be changed to allow for this delay, although we can not completely eliminate this problem, as the level of natural light will change from hour to hour.

Shooting Schedule

To complete our media products planning and research ready to shoot, we created a shooting schedule in which would be used when out shooting. A shooting schedule includes the frame number, shot description, location, date, required time to shoot, actors and props required. Below, I have inserted our shooting schedule.

Animatic

We were tasked to create an animatic in which we must use the sound; both dialogue and superimposed we are planning to use, along with the animated characters on screen. I completed a piece of research (below) into why animatics are used and the best way to create an animatic.
Research
An Animatic is the oldest and historically the most popular form of animation. In a traditionally-animated cartoon, each frame is drawn by hand. (Wikipedia).

An animatic is produced in the pre-production stages of a film. The director usually meets with the storyboard artist to discuss how the scene's of the film should play out. The end result is a mini-movie, that resembles an animated version of the media product that has yet to be filmed. The animatic, is the chance in which the director is able to be creative and test his idea's through the use of the animatic, another advantage of producing an animatic is that a detailed plan of the film can be tested this saving time (and money if a professional production). The animatic can also be a useful tool even when the film is shot, as the animatic can be used as place holders if a part of a scene is to be changed, re-filmed or needs a high amount of editing.

Storyboard Quick, which is the software that our media group will be using. This piece of software removes the traditional hand drawing of storyboards as there is no drawing necessary. It is easy-to-use through just choosing a background, character and then a prop.

ATLAS media productions decided upon taking photos and inserting these into Storyboard Quick in which we used animated characters to resemble our characters positioning within the film.

Storyboard

Before creating our storyboard for our film, Catechize Academy. I have delivered my research into storyboard's below including our film storyboard in which I have explained the use of camera shots.
Research
Storyboards are graphic organizers such as a series of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation,motion graphic or interactive media sequence. (Wikipedia).
The storyboard process was developed at the Walt Disney studio in the 1930's. A film storyboard is a large comic of the film before shooting, the storyboard is used to help film directors visualize the film or a selection of scene's in which potential hazards or creativity can be tried and tested before the actual shooting stage. The storyboard is creating a motion picture which coincide with the film's script. A storyboard can also be used extensively before taking a pitch to their funders, as a visual image can be seen rather than just being explained to the funders.
Our storyboard consists of images from our proposed location, we felt we could recreate our visual ideas better if we were working with actual proposal locations rather than animations.

Camera Shots
Frame 1  - We are planning to use a long shot which will shot the whole of Miss Smith walking past the camera and down the corridor. We will be filming from within a gap in the corridor so Miss Smith will first walk past this camera, then the camera shot will swap for frame 2. We are using this shot because we wanted to show the whole of Miss Smith.
Frame 2 - For frame 2, we will use a track using a close-up of Miss Smiths feet walking down the corridor. We are using this shot because we wanted to track the movement of Miss Smith's feet continuing to walk down the corridor.
Frame 3 - We will use a Mid-shot from behind showing part of Miss Smiths body, from the waist upwards. We are going to use this shot as we want to show Miss Smith continuing to walk down the camera but the rest of the corridor and the width of the corridor can be seen.
Frame 4 - We will continue to follow Miss Smith using the Mid-shot, this time focusing on the characters clothing.
Frame 5 & 6 - We will use a shot reverse shot from over the right shoulder of Miss Smith looking at Mr Jones and over the left shoulder of Mr Jones looking at Miss Smith. We are using this shot to show that the two characters are talking to each other. We will switch between these two shots to show the emotion and dialogue from the characters in shot.
Frame 7 - The camera pans to a Mid-shot showing a notice board in which a piece of paper reads: Directed by Adam Holland. We are using this shot to incorporate the titles and film production crew credits into the film. A range of other images are also on the board surrounding the sign.
Frame 8 - We are going to use a Mid-shot to show the upper body of Mr Jones walking into his office. We are using this shot to show the door and a sign on the door.
Frame 9 - We are going to use a Close up shot of the sign on the door reading: Sam Clark Visual Technician. We are using this sign to incorporate the crews credits into the film.
Frame 10 - The shot will cut to a Long Shot to show all of Miss Smith's body we will use this shot to the young female teacher continuing to walk down the corridor.
Frame 11 - The shot will cut to a Mid-shot of Mr Jones continuing to walk into his office and sit down at his desk chair, we are going to use this shot will introduce the next scene from inside Mr Jones's office.
Frame 12 - We are going to use an over shoulder close up shot to show the computer screen. We are using this shot so that the audience can see what the headteacher is looking at on his computer screen.
Frame 13 - We are using a Mid-shot to show Mr Jones and a brainwashed child both sitting down. This shot will enable use to see both of the characters.
Frame 14 - We will continue to use the Mid-shot from frame 13.
Frame 15 - We are using an Extreme close up of Mr Jones's hand moving a pile of papers which will reveal a piece of paper reading: Thomas Fisher Creative Director.
Frame 16  - We are going to pan to the left whilst still in the ECUS this to reveal a red button in which to activate the school bell.
Frame 17 - ECUS of CCTV screen in Mr Jones's office, we are going to use the extreme close up to fill the screen of the four CCTV cameras.
Frame 18 - Long shot from a high angle in which to resemble a CCTV Camera.
Frame 19 - We are going to use a Mid-shot of Miss Smith wiping the white board on which reads: Produced by Lee Fraser, we are going to use this shot to show the upper body and arms of Miss Smith.
Frame 20 - We are going to use a ECUS in which to show the writing on the board being wiped out by Miss Smith.
Frame 21 - We are once again using the shot from Frame 18 to resemble the CCTV camera, this shot is used to show the children walking out of the room
Frame 22 & 23 - We are continuing to use the long shot in which shows 5 kids still standing.
Frame 24 - Long shot of Miss Smith turning around with a suprised look on her face. We are using this shot to continue to show the 5 kids still standing up in the room.
Frame 25, 26, 27 & 28 - Over shoulder point of view shot; we are using this shot to pan round to view the 5 children standing up in the classroom.
Frame 29  - CCTV high angle; used to show miss smith leaving the room.
Frame 30  - Used to once a again show the CCTV screen in Mr Jones office.
Frame 31 - Mid Shot showing the brainwashed child and Mr Jones.
Frame 32 - Mid shot showing the child walking away and past the camera.
Frame 33 - Blackout used to show a passage of time.
Frame 34 - Mid shot watching the kids walking out of the room.
Frame 35 - Mid shot used to show the a student leaning up the wall and Miss Smith walking past the camera.
Frame 36 - Mid shot used to show both the teacher and male pupil walking past the camera.

Fame 47 - The camera then turns to an over shoulder shot looking at Miss Smith. Used to show that the two kids are once again blocking the door.

Film Actors & Costume

As our film idea is based around a school, I decided to research into characters from the hit Tv Series: Waterloo Road which is set in a school. I used images from there website and inserted them into photoshop to create an image for comparison of costume for our characters.
Mr Jones
We are targeting our head-teacher to be male of around 30 to 40 years of age, short black hair and well kept shaven facial hair. We require 1 actor to play Mr Jones.
I have surveyed 5 people from my media group, to determine their idea of what these teachers teach. The overall results were;
Image 1 - Geography / History
Image 2 - Head-teacher / Senior Teacher
Image 3 - Drama.
From this survey, I can identify that if we model our head-teacher; Mr Jones to image number two, then we would gain the desired effect of portraying this character as a head-teacher. I was able to gain through costume that image 1 is a young teacher, stylish shirt, loose tie and shirt. Where as image 3, although wearing a plain white shirt i am able to identify a stylish tie and brown trousers. Image 2 portrays a senior member of staff due to a full suit, plain shirt and tie. I am also able to identify this characters importance due to his formal dress including a long sleeve shirt in which comes below the arm length of his suit jacket. This character also seems to be wearing cufflinks.

Miss Smith
We are targetting our teacher to be female, of around 20 years of age and with blonde hair. We require 1 Actress to play Miss Smith.

We are attempting to cast our character; Miss Smith to the photos above. We have researched the images from google and have found that the stereotypical view of young female teacher is;
- Cut off blouse (simple colours - blue, red, pink and white)
- Cut off High Jumper
- Black trousers.
- High Heeled shoes or stilettos.

Students;
We require 9 Students including Jack. The students are to be a mix of both males and females and aged around 12-14 years or in Year 7 or 8 at school.
For the costume of the students, we are proposing to use the standard GWPAHS uniform;
Boys - Black trainers or Shoes, Black Trousers, White Collared Shirt and Tie.
Girls - Black shoes, Black trousers or Skirt and White blouse.



Jack
A male student aged 12-14 or in Year 7 or 8. 

Jack  - White trainers (reason for detention), Black trousers, White collared shirt, tie and Spiky Hair.

In total we require;
- 1 Actor for Mr Jones
- 1 Actress for Miss Smith
- 9 Students
- 1 Male student for Jack

Location

As our film is based around a plot of a brainwashing headmaster in a school, we have decided to film in Great Wyrley P.A. High School. This decision was made through the ease of accessing the location and the low shooting problems within the school. We have taken images from our location and inserted below.
Here is an image looking down the main corridor of GWPAHS. I am planning to use this corridor to track Miss Smith walking down and meeting Mr Jones. We are able to use several camera angles to produce a good edit.
 This is our chosen location outside of Miss Smith's classroom where the two brainwashed block the entrance to Miss Smith's classroom. 

Here is an image of Miss Smiths proposed classroom, i have taken a photo from the corner of the classroom where the CCTV effect will be created. We have chose this classroom as it is of a good size and we are able to create the whiteboard opening titles effect along with the door and teachers desk being in a good place. The classroom is also near to the corridor above so it will be easier to film with hopefully less jump cuts.
Hear is an image looking up the corridor in which we will use to film the running scene. We have chose this location as we are able to position the cameras in many angles to show a fast paced running when editing. We can film from outside in through the windows and use both the top and bottom of the corridor.






Here i have added an image of the location we will filming the head teacher in his office, and also where Miss Smith gets dragged into the head teachers office.The office will also the camera will go to black out and the door will then slam. We have chosen this office as it is along the corridor in which Miss Smith will be cornered into along with also be very close to other shooting locations so the travelling between shoots will be much smaller and further filming and perfection can be acquired.

Script

In order for me to create our media product script, I decided to complete research into why a script is actually used and the best way to present the script. Below, I have inserted our films script.
Research
screenplay or script is a written work that is made especially for a film or television program. Screenplays can be original works or adaptations from existing pieces of writing. The format of a script is structured in a way that one page usually equates to one minute of screen time.

Treatment Feedback.

Below, I have embedded a recording of our film treatment feedback. In which we asked members of our Sixth form to come and listen to our treatment, we felt that our media group whom some unavailable on the day had already listened to our media product ideas. So we asked for a range of students some from media studies and some not, to listen and give feedback as this was the first time they had heard the film idea.



Feedback Questions
  • 7:48 - A question was asked about characters and if the Miss Smith in our film was the same Miss Smith from GWPAHS. We have not modeled our character around Miss Smith. We have made this fictional character up.
  • 7:53 - A question aroused around the possible issues with using lower school pupils. We are planning to ask the drama department to recommend the most advanced students in year 7 and year 8. Obviously, we are hoping to gain sensible students to act in our film but this is not always possible even with directions from ATLAS Media.
No other questions were aroused at the feedback recording session.

Film Treatment Research

Before creating our film treatment for our Thriller film, I conducted research into the reasons why treatments are used and the best formatting way of creating a treatment. I used a range of websites and treatment examples I have included my research below.


What is a Film Treatment?
A film treatment or a treatment for a short is a piece of prose, typically the step between scene cards and the first draft of a screenplay for a motion picture, television program, or radio play. It is generally longer and more detailed than an outline, and it may include details of directorial style that an outline omits. They read like a short story, except told in the present tense and describing events as they happen. There are two types: the original draft treatment, created during the writing process, and the presentation treatment, created as presentation material. (Wikipedia)

What Treatments are used for
Treatments are widely used within the motion picture industry in the development process. The document are used by the screenwriter to pitch the screenplay, but may also use a treatment to sell a concept of what they are pitching to the film company.


How a Treatment is Presented
A Treatment is generally presented in chronological order, explaining the essential and important story events that make up the scenes.

Example's of Thrillers
A treatment is generally long and detailed, due to a compilation of full-scene outlines put together. The standard  treatment for a film is 40 A4 pages in Courier New 12 font, Although usually under 80 pages. An example of detail and length is 'The Terminator' original treatment is of 44 A4 pages of length.

Treatment Examples
Below, is the treatment for Batman 3; the treatment is long due to the high amount of action within the film. When writing our film treatment, we are setting our selves a maximum of 4/5 pages in which will relate to the two minutes of film.

CATECHIZE ACADEMY 
We have used Catechize Academy, as the translation; Brainwashing School, is the plot of our film. All members of the group agreed to the title, to which we will now call our film.

Product Planning - Prezi

I have created a online presentation using a software called Prezi. I have used this as another way of presenting our film product ideas due to its ease of information presenting.


Genre and Audience Research

Thrillers, are becoming ever more popular with a new hit film 'I am Number Four' released February 2011 with an opening weekend of £1,628,523; shown in 393 screens across the United Kingdom. 'The Black Swan' another thriller released in January 2011, had an opening weekend of £2,762,429 shown in 356 screens. This being evidence of the ever growing audience of thrillers.

The typical thriller audience: "Someone who is easily intrigued, whom enjoys working out the developing plot themselves but never normally gets there although never gives up trying. This individual still loves the element of surprise. The average individual is under 25 years of age.

We (ATLAS Media) are targeting our film classification to be '15' thus after researching the guidelines; therefore our target audience is 15 to 21 year olds. As our main characters are teenagers/young adults, there is a pthwy in which the audience can feel a connection to their personal life or experiances can be gained. The gender of the target audience is not specific as age ranges, although for our film the gender would be mainly male, though females could be attracted to the film.

Product Ideas (Feedback)

ATLAS media products conducted a product idea's presentation, in which we would present our film ideas to the group and request feedback to improve our idea and also highlight any foreseeable problems to which we missed. Below, I have included the recording from the presentation in which I have evaluated, highlighting any problems aroused in the presentation.

Analysis of Feedback
  • 2:40 - Josh C - Drifting off thriller grounds - Going to specific edit to create the headmaster as evil ensuring that we keep to the thriller grounds.
  • 3:29 - Josh C - Too close to 'Childrens films' - I think that the whole location of a secondary school makes the scene and film set away from a childrens film into teenagers to students that have left school.
  • 3:48 - Dean T - Once again dean meantioned to keep away from the 'Childrens idea' along with giving feedback on frames to which we are going to keep away from the stereotypical beliefs of a headmaster on a spinnning chair stroking a cat, we may even challenge this convention.
  • 5:30 - Rob - Use of non-diegetic sound - We have took on robs feedback and are planning to use the 'late Motive' along tension building music and editing both fast and slow to change the pace of film.
  • 6:30 - Matt W - Headmaster & New Teacher idea - We are using this feedback in our product as a away to introduce the new teacher.
  • 7:10 - Josh C - Sub Genre's of the Film - Psychological, Mystery and Conspiracy.
  • 8:20 - Mr Hood - Who is the Target Audience? - 18+ (people that have left school) this challenging the thriller convention.
  • Silent Bell ringing - Play a sound that only the audience can hear along with the audience being able to see the facial expressions of the characters.
  • 9:39 - Mr Hood - Replay footage - Play different sounds when the footage is replayed.
  • 10:04 - Mr Hood - Blackboard Jungle - Film example where a new teacher is introduced.
  • 10:30 - Mr Hood - Difficult to in finding age difference's - Using students and teachers with a good age difference.
  • 11:05 - Mr Hood - Mr Hood also brought up the problem of getting teachers and students on board - but members of our media group could star in our product.
  • 11:50 - Pleasantville - A Black and white film where all the corrupt people turn into colour - This convention is being used in our films by having the brainwashed students although still wearing uniform being a lot smarter dressed.
  • 13:05 - Matt W -  Bell with flash maybe being used in Hoods room, associate flash with skits-co kids.
  • 13:50 - Dean - Teacher packing up equipment, when she looks up the kids are all sitting up straight. - Possible use in our media product using the new teacher.
  • 14:40 - Sam B - Do not use all students - In our media product we are planning to use just a couple of students in a classroom, this showing the possible brainwashing spreading amongst the students.
  • 15:45 - Josh C - Shots being used - We will cover the shots being used when we create our storyboard, although we will use a lot of close-ups showing fear of characters.
  • 16:45 - Dean - Reason for kids stopping late - this is unnecessary as we are only creating the 2 minute part of the film.
  • 17:15 - Use of CCTV eg Paranormal Activity - Using this convention in the headmaster office so he is able to watch the kids that he has brainwashed.

Product Ideas (Pre-feedback)

ATLAS media arranged a meeting within our media studies lesson, in which we created a list of idea's around the ideas of thrillers. We watched all of the Youtube video examples, in order to gaze thriller conventions although strict original ideas were only used. Below, I have added the range of conventions that we are planning to challenge and use along with our pre-peer feedback. I have also listed the pro's and con's from the ideas that we as a group brought up. From a large list we selected a few ideas in which we will again come together to work on the idea and present to our media group.

Creative Idea's
Skitsco police;
This was a good idea and although being very challenging to convey the idea of the police officer.We have the issue of Uniform and costume. It would be hard to create a police officer, without a resembled costume.

Mental Homeless;
This would be a good idea and possible achievable if we had further time in shooting although it would be also hard to show the 'Homeless' effect with a lack of costume and budget.

School Training kids (Brainwashing);
If we were to use this idea, we would already have a location available by using school. Although using teachers and students, possible acting and availability issues may occur.

Hanging;
If we were to reproduce a hanging, it would take a long time to produce and we only have a short shooting and editing time. Plus this idea has already been used in another media students work from our school.

Music & Lighting to Hypnotize;
This creative idea would use several conventions and we could use previous professional films to see how they produce the hypnotized effect. With the short time we have to shoot and edit, creating the effect would be very hard to create and a large amount of camera work would be required.

School bell usage;
This idea could be challenged or incorporated into our film as we could record our school bell ringing or possibly over dub the school bell by using a preset sound. If we were to use the school bell, it only rings once an hour.

Night and Day Scene's;
If we were to shoot using night and day scene's we could use or challenge the conventions although we have the issue of not being able to shoot around the school premises unless a member of staff is around.

Film Classification

Since the Video Recordings Act 1984, all 'Video works' (films, TV Programs, Video games, etc) are to be classified by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification), unless they fall within the definition of an exempted work.
I have researched into the categories and the guidelines to why the classification. I have included this research below;
 
'Universal'
This film should be suitable for all aged four years and over. They should be set within a positive moral framework. Offering counterbalances to any Violence, Threat or Horror.

'Parental Guidance'
Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. Parents are advised to consider whether content may upset younger or more sensitive children. Mild use of language only, Sexual activity may be implied but infrequent.

'Aged 12 or Over'
Video works classified at '12' may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them. Brief and discreet use of nudity, Sexual activity and infrequent use of drugs or reference to drugs.
'12' only exists for Video Works, no one younger than 12 may rent or buy a '12' rated video work.

'Aged 12 or Over'
12A is a category only exists in cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. The viewing is the responsibility of the accompanying adult.

'Aged 15 or Over'
The Video work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behavior. References and use of drugs is aloud but must not promote or encourage drugs, Sexual Activity can be portrayed although without strong detail. Use of strong language 'Fuck' and the strongest term 'Cunt' may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repetition of the Terms is unacceptable.

'Aged 18 or Over'
Material is in breach of the criminal law, created through the commission of a criminal offense, a risk or harm to individuals through behavior or society and the use of explicit images of sexual activity which can not be justified.

'18 Restricted'
Classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas or sex shops. The infliction of pain which causes lasting physical harm, portrayal of any sexual activity or material which encourages sexually abusive activity.

After researching all of the classifications, I believe our film would be a classification of '15'. The classification states that moderate violence is allowed although not dwelling on the infliction of pain or injury. So the use of kidnapping can be used although detail which could be copied should not be dwelled upon. Film Titles Research

I have researched and embedded opening scene's from films. As we will be creating a two minute film, we will need to include titles and a short piece of film. I researched into the many different ways in which the opening scene and titles start;
  • Titles start and then the movie fades through the titles into the film.
  • A piece of film, then the titles and continuation of the film.
  • A piece of film (not related to the film), titles and then continuation of the film.
  • Titles included into the film.
I have included a range of different opening scene's added below;

Toy Story 3

Opening Titles;
  • Superimposed Title
  • Toy Story Logo over the top of cartoon clouds.
  • Film starts before the titles come up.
  • Many of the characters featured in the film are used in the opening scene
  • Standard white text
  • Symbolisic of a children targeted film
  • Easy to read text
  • Melodramatic music by Randy Newman
  • Titles fade out and the film starts (not a piece of film that is not related to the starting film eg James Bond car scene)
Due to Youtube removing the previous opening scene from Youtube, I have embedded a video from which i believe as close as possible. Many of the characteristics from the toy story opening scenes are the same through out all Toy Story films.




Skyline

Opening Titles;
  • Titles are used to post comments to the audience ("Dont look up" & "Maybe we should have listened")
  • Titles are backed up with a high volume of music
  • Special effects and animation use to create Futuristic representation.
  • Blue titles (blue used earlier in clip - symbolistic of aliens)
  • Black background
  • Dont use superimposing - sense of the topic needs to take up the whole screen


Spider man 2

Opening Titles;
  • Flicking of a Spider man comic book.
  • Turns into the Studio title.
  • Graphics travel along a web (resemblance of spiders)
  • Red background with white font.
  • Titles break out into further film information.
  • Spinning animation of 'Spider man 2'

Thriller Research

Below I have added several thriller film examples, I will use these videos to help me to identify thriller film conventions to enable me to create a realistic thriller film.
The Dark Knight

From the video's above, I have collected a range of conventions evident in thrillers. I have also included a background to thrillers.

Description
Thriller is a genre of Literature, Film and Television. The main components of a Thriller is it's use of Suspense, tension and excitement.

Famous Directors
A Key role model in the light of thrillers was Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock. He directed over fifty films in which his usual genre of suspense or psychological thrillers was repeated throughout much of them. His work in both 'Silent' and 'Talkies' film helped him to achieve further success before eventually moving to American to become part of Hollywood. His Famous film titles include The 39 Steps (1935), The Lady Vanishes (1938) and Strangers on a Train (1951).

Types of Thrillers
A thriller has many sub genres with the main being mystery and crime. Other types of thrillers are; Action/Adventure, Sci-fi, Western, Romantic Comedy, Psychological, Supsense and Tension.

Main Thrillers
The Godfather (1972 & 1974), Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Inception (2010), The Dark Knight (2008), Goodfellas (1990) and Jaws (1975).

Characteristics of a Thriller
A Thriller includes several characteristics which are usually evident during most thrillers. I have found that the main characterisitics are;

Corrupt and Dark Atmosphere
Happy Ending (Villain is killed or arrested)
A Cliff Hanger
Psycho Friends
High Adrenaline Rush
Uncertainty
Terror
Police
Detectives (Mainly Male)
Criminals
Escaped Prisoners

Conventions of a Thriller
Location
The common setting of a thriller I would expect to be an urban, isolated surbuban setting or something in strong contrast such as a big city or a quiet village. I think the setting is largely dependent on the narrative of the thriller and the types of characters in the film. The aim of the setting I think would be a location that would resemble or rebel against what is expected to happen there.

Character
The appearance of a common thriller character I think would vary depending on the narrative. An example is the character can be smartly dressed and dark colours, such a James Bond, compared to a character like the Joker whose appearance is completely different. Personality-wise I would say that a thriller character is likely to be people who are: characters with dark pasts, criminals or psychotic individuals.

Narrative
The general narrative of a thriller, shows two points of views that are either related or in contrast to one another. One of the characters is shown to create empathy towards the audience and the other who is portrayed as a villain has a dark past or twisted view. 

Props
In a thriller, the obvious prop is a weapon which is used to help define the opposites of the two characters. I think the main aim of having these types of props is to significantly add to the suspense element of the thriller. These props are a straight forward way of building tension.

Sound
I would expect the main purpose of the used sound effects are to create an eerie, creepy and create a sense of currupt atmosphere. The music used in the opening scene is non-diegetic which is an out of story sound eg sound effects, narrative commentry or mood music. The music is a way of setting the scene, this then helps the audience to see the themes and the general atmosphere of the movie. Thrillers also use diegetic sounds which also help to create the tension. These sounds are made by objects in the story or using the characters voice as a voice over.



By identifying conventions in thriller examples above, it will enable me to create a realistic thriller film, in which involves and incorporates conventions of thrillers.

Task Commission

Consisting of:

We are all members of Great Wyrley Performing Arts High School Sixth form Media studies group. We have come together to form a production company in which a two minute short film will be filmed, edited and produced. The following blog posts will show the pathway to our final product, through research & planning, filming and editing.  I have chosen to create a thriller due to the technology, budget and location issues with other genres within the film business;

  • Science-Fiction film; would require a powerful animation software which we have no use of in school.
  • Crime; we would have to promote crime, mobsters and gangster attitudes within the film in which we have no budget for.
  • Horror; it would be very difficult to create a horror film due to the extend script and storyboard writing to create the horror theme.
  • Historical; it would be hard to recreate the time set with no budget due to the large amount of costume needed.
During my blog, I am going to conduct research into thriller films in order to create an accurate film in the genre of a thriller. I will use videos from Youtube and films from a range of thrillers for comparison use. I will show you my journey through planning and research, filming and the final two minute edited film.

Through creating this blog and completing the production process, it will enable me to become a better film producer through completing all the stages of producing a film; by working with high definition cameras, Film production and editing software along with all the pre-production; storyboarding, scripting, location research, costume and make up research, prop research, animatic completion.
