Construction of our Media Product

Preparing for the Shoot;
Distribution of Jobs;
  • Tom Fisher; Creative Director, in which he will be in charge of the actors offering dramatic advise to transfer 'our' view of how to act the scene. Tom was also responsible for distributing scripts for actors and shooting schedule for camera man and director. Tom was also responsible for organizing and communication with actors.
  • Lee Fraser; Producer, in which he assisted the director in chief decisions whilst also organising props. Lee was also tasked with checking for Continuity.
  • Adam Holland; Director, in which he directed the actors in the scene. Adam also assisted with the framing of shots in accordance with the animatic and storyboard.
  • Sam Clark; Visual Technician, I will be responsible for booking the use of the cameras, collecting equipment ready to take to location and charging of camera equipment. As camera man, I will be responsible for checking framing, continuity and shot usage.
Shooting on Location diary;
Thursday 10th March 2011; Tom and I further joined by Lee (After his driving lesson) filmed the start, when Miss Smith walked down the corridor. Sam and Lee explored several different camera angles and shots; filming through windows, low angle shots looking at feet and tracking shots. Whilst Tom took on the roll of director; assisting actors to match our 'Idea' of how the film is to be developed, whilst also working the clapper board and continuity.
Filming went really well and managed to get a lot more done than expected although filming quality was still our top concern. We filmed two takes of everything, so that we had enough footage to edit.
Adam did not attend this shoot.
Monday 14th March 2011; Adam, Lee, Tom and I, started the filming of the CCTV footage in the classroom in which will be played on the screen of the headmasters computer. A small number of lower school students attended although further recruiting by Adam and Tom meant that we had sufficient numbers.
Filming went okay, although use of lower school kids may be rethought next time when planning. Possible re-shoot, as many kids did not act how we wanted.
All Members present.
Tuesday 15th March 2011; Adam, Lee, Tom and I continued to film although only 1 student turned up to film along with actress playing Miss Smith. We filmed several of shots whilst we had the low amount of actors available. We watched the footage back at the location to make sure the quality was of a high standard. Hopefully we will be finished filming and editing by Tuesday 22nd March. Ready for the deadline on the 23rd.
All Members present although disappointed with the lack of volunteers turning up.

Editing the Footage;
In order to capture, edit and publish our footage, we would have to use Final Cut Express; an editing package  produced by Apple. Final Cut Express allows us to capture, edit, add transitions and effects and export. We also used Final Cut Express's sister products; Soundtrack Pro and Livetype. Soundtrack Pro is a piece of software also produced by apple in which we would be able to create, manipulate and adjust samples of music. Soundtrack Pro hosts many in built samples, incidental music, Foley and sound effects which we would use in our film. Livetype is another apple produced software; in which to create live titles for films and other media products. Livetype allows the title to be animated with different effects, fonts and patterns.
Once combined the use of Soundtrack Pro and Livetype the final files would be imported into Final Cut express. As a way of publishing our film for peer feedback and marking purposes, we will be uploading our films via YouTube; an online video publishing site.

To edit, we will be using 3 Apple iMac 27" Computers, one of which will be used entirley for editing the captured footage, one being used to seek sound effects via Soundtrack Pro and creating titles in Livetype and the other iMac being used to play our animatic for the film. We will be editing to keep to the animatic to the best be can although swapping shot types and scenes to create a more realistic film.

Film Titles Creation
I watched several idents added below in order to get an idea of idents. Idents are used as a animated film 'logo' a piece of animation in which represents the company. The ident is used every time a movie is created by that company. I have included a range of company idents from the film industry; as the ident is very reflective of the revenue and production scale from that company.
I have added a youtube video of a Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar idents; The largest media and entertainment company (in total revenue) has a very complex ident with sparkle dust leading onto the title fading in. Pixar, uses a piece of animation with their title using a lamp to create a simple but inventive ident.

Paramount Pictures; Large American production and distribution company whose ident is a circle of stars wrapping around the top of the mountain, as the title fades in from behind the camera. Simple but imaginative and very well known.

Working Title; A smaller film company owned by Universal Pictures. A simple cheaper ident in which the name of the company sits on top of a spinning globe. And working title is very similar with a glove spinning and the title fading into place at the end. These are very simple, cheap and easy to recognise.

Our Film Titles
For ATLAS media, i have made a TV static in which the text comes past the screen. I have embedded my step by step video of me creating the TV static for our titles. I will then use LiveType; a final cut studio product to add our text to the video.

TV STATIC

Rough Cut;
I am happy with our rough cut although obviously unahppy with not editing the full two minutes. The scenes we have shot are of good quality although we are happy to take feedback from our peers. We experienced problems with actually gather lower school pupils to act in our film and act to how we want them too, but we chose to continue using them in our film.

Rough Cut Feedback

Our main feedback point is to finish editing the film. Above i have embedded our Rough Cut recorded Feedback. Thanks to our AS media group for your comments and we will be amending our film with your suggestions.

Rough Cut Feedback Comments

Re-Shoots & Re-Edits;
From the feedback given to us by our peers, ATLAS media decided to re-shoot parts of the film in which the audience felt were poor. We decided to go out and film the class room shots and complete a fresh edit.
The first change was the opening shots of the school. Adam, Lee & Tom (Sam Unavailable) went out and filmed outside of the school to replace the shots with a new perspective of a student walking into school. The shots now clearly show that the location is a school which was highlighted a problem in the rough cut feedback.
The second change was that of the text titles. We have changed the text font and effect to match the titles background and plot. After feedback from the group, that the titles were poorly chosen.
After long thinking, we decided that it would be best not to include a sound effect of footsteps as there would be no sound being created when walking on a carpet.
We have rearranged and spell checked the signs so that all members of ATLAS media are on superimposed signs.
We have also included all the other shots from around school to make the film up to two minutes.

Final Film;
After exporting our film film out of Final Cut Express as a QuickTime Movie, we had to use Compressor; a file compression software due to the high quality output as a .mov (QuickTime movie) file. We compressed the final film into a m4v; an apple codec, in which quality is still okay but the file will be easier to upload to YouTube. Below, I have embedded our final film uploaded into YouTube.
